Long-time Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman has agreed to a one-year deal with a base salary of $6 million to remain with Detroit, ESPN.com's Darren Pang has learned.

Yzerman, a 38-year-old future Hall of Famer, can make as much as $8 million through achieving a series of performance clauses that includes the Red Wings winning the Stanley Cup. He earned $8 million last season.

The agreement comes on the heels of the Red Wings losing unrestricted free agent Sergei Fedorov to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim on Saturday. Fedorov, a six-time All-Star, signed a five-year, $40 million contract.

Because of an injury that required surgery to realign his right knee, Yzerman did not debut last season until Feb. 24. Without Fedorov in the middle, Yzerman's health is crucial to Detroit's coming season and what could be Yzerman's last.

Yzerman last season won the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, an award named after the late Minnesota North Stars center and given to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship and dedication to hockey.
